Our Best Historic Screenings

With our 57th Season suspended the  Committee

is making weekly recommendations of films to

watch that were screened during the last 20

years which were extremely well received by members and guests.

This week's recommendation

Spain 2006, 121 mins.

Directed by Pedro Almodóvar

The film was the 625th film screened by RFS on 15th January 2008.  Volver was the joint second to top ranked film of Season 45, it got an approval mark of 90% from those attending (It was the second joint top film with Les Choristes).

Post Tom Cruise Penelope Cruz returns to her Spanish roots in this film from one of RFS’s favourite directors.   She is simply mesmerising in Almodóvar’s celebration of motherhood, his La Mancha roots and how the dead hold sway over the living.  A mix of fake melodrama and emotional crescendos.

Full film notes available in the Twickenham & Richmond Tribune here.

The film can be streamed from Amazon Prime and the BFI (BFI Player) and the discs are available from Amazon and other retailers.
